With experience presenting archaeology programmes on the BBC, Gillian Hovell, ‘The Muddy Archaeologist’ specialises in making ancient history and archaeology accessible, lively and fascinating. Her engaging narratives bring to life new discoveries, ancient worlds and archaeological debates, and even draw in people who don’t yet know that they’re interested.
Experienced in film work and on radio, Gillian is a writer, speaker and lecturer who shares her passion for exploring our humanity through ancient civilisations and cultures.
Gillian lectures for York University and for the British Museum, while her enthusiasm, laughter and sincerity also take her lecturing around the world. She has excavated sites ranging from the Stone Age through the Roman era to the Medieval world in northern Britain, and the Roman site of Oplontis, Pompeii,
Her knowledge about sites and cultures stretch from prehistoric Britain to the far reaches of the Roman Mediterranean, and through the many lands, civilisations and eras in between. She is dedicated to enabling folk to interact with and enjoy these amazing ancient worlds.
